Inequalities and their solutions
An inequality compares two numbers or expressions. The symbol < means “less than”, > means “greater than”, and = shows equality. The wide side of the comparison symbol faces the greater value: 8 > 3 and 3 < 8.
How can an inequality be checked?
If a variable replaces a number, substitute the proposed value and compare both sides. A compound inequality such as 4 < x < 9 means that both parts must be true: x is greater than 4 and less than 9.
- Read the inequality from left to right.
- Calculate the expressions on both sides.
- Compare the resulting values before choosing a symbol.
A common mistake is to select a sign by looking only at its pointed end. It is more reliable to remember that the wide side faces the greater number.
