Arithmetic mean

The mean describes the value each member would receive if the total were shared equally. To calculate the arithmetic mean, add all values and divide the sum by the number of values.

For example, the sum of 6, 8 and 10 is 24. Since there are three values, their mean is 24 ÷ 3 = 8.

How can mistakes be avoided?

  • Count all values, not only different numbers. A repeated value must be counted again.
  • Divide by the number of values, not by their sum or the greatest value.
  • Check that the mean lies between the smallest and greatest values.

If the mean and the number of values are known, their total can be found by multiplying the mean by the number of values.
