Sample questions
- Calculate the area of a right triangle.
- The legs of a right triangle are ___ cm and ___ cm. Find its area.
- The area of a right triangle is ___ cm² and one leg is ___ cm. Find the other leg.
- A triangular flag has a base of ___ m and a height of ___ m. What is its area?
- A triangular garden bed has a base of ___ m and a height of ___ m. What is its area?
Area of a right triangle
In a right triangle, two sides form a 90° angle. One can be used as the base and the other as its perpendicular height. The area is half the product of the base and height: A = a × h ÷ 2.
If the perpendicular sides are 6 cm and 4 cm, the area is 6 × 4 ÷ 2 = 12 cm². Division by 2 is required because two identical right triangles form a rectangle.
What should be checked?
- The selected sides must be perpendicular.
- All lengths must use the same units.
- An area answer is written in square units.
If the area and one perpendicular side are known, multiply the area by 2 and divide by the known side to find the other side.
