Operations with multi-digit numbers
Place value is essential when calculating with multi-digit numbers. In column addition and subtraction, ones are aligned with ones, tens with tens and hundreds with hundreds. Regrouping across a place-value boundary must be recorded in the next column.
Multiplication and division
In long multiplication, multiply by each digit of the other factor and align partial products according to place value. In long division, begin with the highest available place and determine how many times the divisor fits without exceeding the current part of the dividend.
Check an answer with an inverse operation: addition with subtraction and division with multiplication. Estimation is also useful for detecting a misplaced digit or a result that is much too large or too small.
