Fractions and mixed numbers
The denominator shows how many equal parts form a whole, while the numerator shows how many of those parts are selected. A fraction is proper when its numerator is smaller than its denominator. It is improper when the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator.
Mixed numbers
A mixed number contains a whole-number part and a fractional part. For example, 7/3 = 2 1/3 because seven thirds contain two complete wholes and one third. To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the whole part by the denominator, add the numerator and keep the same denominator.
For equal denominators, the fraction with the greater numerator is greater. For equal numerators, the fraction with the smaller denominator is greater because the whole is divided into fewer, larger parts.
