- Increase the number ___ by ___ percent.
- Select the correct match to ___%
Percentages as hundredths
One percent means one hundredth of a whole: 1% = 1/100. Therefore, 25% is 25/100 or one quarter, 50% is one half and 100% represents the complete quantity.
How can a percentage of a number be found?
To find a% of a number, divide the number by 100 and multiply by a. For example, 20% of 60 is 60 ÷ 100 × 20 = 12. Familiar fractions can simplify calculations: 50% is one half, 25% is one quarter and 10% is found by dividing by 10.
When increasing a quantity by a percentage, first find the increase and then add it to the original quantity. Do not give only the percentage part when the question asks for the new final value.
