Units of length, mass, capacity and time
Measurement units describe the length of an object, its mass, the capacity of a container or the duration of an event. Length is measured in millimetres, centimetres, decimetres, metres and kilometres. Common mass units are grams, kilograms and tonnes, capacity is measured in millilitres and litres, and time is measured in seconds, minutes, hours and days.
What should you remember?
- 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 dm = 10 cm, 1 m = 100 cm and 1 km = 1000 m.
- 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 t = 1000 kg.
- 1 l = 1000 ml.
- 1 min = 60 s, 1 h = 60 min and 1 day = 24 h.
Before selecting an answer, read both units and decide whether the quantity is being converted to a smaller or a larger unit. The numerical value increases when converting to a smaller unit and decreases when converting to a larger one. A common mistake is to use 100 or 1000 for every conversion even though units of time follow different relationships.
