Perimeter of a shape

Perimeter is the complete distance around a closed shape. It is calculated by adding the lengths of all sides. Because perimeter is a length, the answer is written in centimetres, metres or another unit of length, not in square units.

Rectangles and squares

Opposite sides of a rectangle have equal lengths, so its perimeter can be calculated with P = 2 × (a + b). All four sides of a square are equal, so its perimeter is P = 4 × a. Each formula is a shorter way to represent addition of all sides.

How can an unknown side be found?

If the perimeter of a rectangle and one side are known, first subtract the lengths of both known opposite sides from the perimeter. The remaining length belongs to two equal sides, so divide it by 2. A side of a square is found by dividing its perimeter by 4. Add the resulting sides again to check that they give the original perimeter.
