How should a word problem be solved?
A word problem does not state the required mathematical operation directly. The operation must be selected from the situation being described. First identify what is known, what changes and what must be calculated. Numbers in the text are pieces of information, and they do not always need to be added or subtracted immediately.
A reliable solution plan
- Read the complete problem and identify the question separately.
- Write down the necessary information and its units.
- Decide whether a quantity increases, decreases, is shared equally or is repeated several times.
- Choose an operation, calculate and write the answer in words.
- Check whether the answer is reasonable in the described situation.
The phrase “altogether” often suggests addition and “left” often suggests subtraction, but a keyword alone is not enough. For example, when money is transferred from one child to another, their combined amount does not change. Always understand the complete situation instead of relying on a single word.
