Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

The four basic arithmetic operations are connected. Addition combines quantities, subtraction finds a difference or a remaining amount, multiplication is a shorter way to add equal groups, and division shows how to share a quantity equally or determine how many equal groups can be made.

Order of operations

Expressions are not always calculated from left to right. Operations in parentheses are completed first, followed by multiplication and division, and then addition and subtraction. Operations with equal priority are completed from left to right. In 8 + 3 × 4, calculate 3 × 4 first, so the result is 20 rather than 44.

How can an answer be checked?

  • Check addition with subtraction.
  • Check subtraction with addition.
  • Check multiplication with division.
  • Check division with multiplication.

It is useful to estimate the size of an answer before calculating. If the result is very different from the estimate, check the order of operations and each calculation again.
