Multiplication facts up to 5
Multiplication shows the total number of objects in several equal groups. For example, 4 × 3 means four groups of three, so it can be written as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Understanding equal groups makes multiplication facts easier to remember as connected ideas rather than isolated answers.
Useful multiplication rules
- Multiplying by 1 leaves a number unchanged.
- Multiplying by 2 doubles a number.
- Products of 5 end in 0 or 5.
- Changing the order of the factors does not change the product: 3 × 5 = 5 × 3.
If a multiplication fact is forgotten, it can be rebuilt from a known fact. If 4 × 4 = 16, then 4 × 5 is four more, so it equals 20. Multiplication facts also support division: if 5 × 3 = 15, then 15 ÷ 5 = 3 and 15 ÷ 3 = 5.
