Even and odd numbers

An even number can be divided into two equal groups of whole objects, while an odd number leaves one object without a pair. It is not necessary to divide the complete number to determine parity; only the final digit needs to be checked.

Recognition rule

  • Numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 are even.
  • Numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 are odd.

The rule also works for large numbers. For example, 346 is even because its final digit is 6, while 2025 is odd because it ends in 5.

What happens during operations?

The sum of two even numbers or two odd numbers is even. The sum of one even and one odd number is odd. Multiplying any whole number by an even number gives an even product. These relationships can be used to check whether an answer is possible without completing the entire calculation again.
