Multiplication table from 1 to 9
Fluent multiplication facts make division, fractions, area calculations and word problems easier. Students should understand equal groups, the commutative property and the relationship with division rather than memorising disconnected products.
Calculation strategies
- Multiplying by 1 leaves a number unchanged, while multiplying by 0 gives 0.
- Multiplying by 2 doubles a number, and multiplying by 4 doubles it twice.
- Multiplication by 5 can be connected to multiplication by 10 and halving.
- To multiply by 9, multiply by 10 and subtract one group.
Changing the order of the factors does not change the product. If 6 × 8 = 48 is known, then 8 × 6 = 48, 48 ÷ 6 = 8 and 48 ÷ 8 = 6 are also known. When solving the test, check whether the size of each answer is reasonable.
