Area of rectangles and squares
Area measures how many square units fit inside a shape. The area of a rectangle is its length multiplied by its width: A = a × b. All sides of a square are equal, so its area is A = a × a.
Difference between area and perimeter
Perimeter is the distance around a shape and is measured in units of length, such as centimetres. Area describes the inside of a shape and is measured in square units, such as cm². Similar numbers in a problem do not mean that the same formula should be used.
Finding an unknown side
If the area of a rectangle and one side are known, divide the area by the known side. If A = 24 cm² and a = 6 cm, then b = 24 ÷ 6 = 4 cm. Check the answer by multiplying the side lengths again. Before calculating, ensure that all lengths use the same measurement unit.
