Sample questions

  • Compare a and b. Choose the symbol.
  • Which number is smaller: a and b?
  • Which number is greater: a and b?
  • Choose the number that is one smaller than a.
  • Compare a and b. Which symbol fits?
  • Choose the number that is one greater than a.

Comparing numbers

When comparing two numbers, decide which is greater, which is smaller or whether they are equal. On a number line, a number farther to the right is greater and one farther to the left is smaller.

Comparison symbols

  • The symbol > means “greater than”.
  • The symbol < means “less than”.
  • The symbol = means that both numbers are equal.

Read both numbers before choosing a symbol. “One greater” means add 1, while “one smaller” means subtract 1.
