- Calculate ∛n.
- Compare √n and b. Choose the correct sign.
- Calculate: √a · √b.
- Which statement about the principal square root is correct?
- Simplify by taking the greatest possible factor outside the radical: √n.
- Calculate √n.
Square and cube roots
The square root √a is the non-negative number whose square equals a. A cube root ∛a may be negative because the cube of a negative number is negative. Exact values can be recognised from a table of perfect squares and cubes.
Estimating and simplifying
If a number is not a perfect square, place its root between two consecutive integers. Extract perfect-square factors, for example √(36a) = 6√a. To compare non-negative square roots, compare their radicands.
