Roman numerals
Roman numerals use the symbols I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. When reading from left to right, a smaller or equal symbol after a greater one is added, while a smaller symbol before a greater one is usually subtracted.
Main combinations
- IV = 4 and IX = 9.
- XL = 40 and XC = 90.
- CD = 400 and CM = 900.
For example, XIV = 10 + 4 = 14 and XCIII = 90 + 3 = 93. V, L and D are normally not repeated, while I, X, C and M are repeated no more than three times in succession. Check an answer by separating the notation into individual values.
