Perimeter and area
Perimeter is the distance around a shape, so side lengths are added and the result uses units of length. Area describes the inside and uses square units. For a rectangle P = 2(a + b), A = a × b; for a square P = 4a, A = a².
Composite shapes
A composite shape can be divided into simpler rectangles or triangles and their areas added. For perimeter, count only the outside boundary; internal dividing lines are not included.
If an area and one rectangle side are known, divide the area by that side to find the other. In a fencing problem, determine whether the complete boundary is enclosed or a gate is left open. Convert every length to the same unit before calculating.
