Divisibility rules
Divisibility rules determine whether a number divides exactly without performing long division. A number is divisible by 2 when its final digit is even, by 5 when it ends in 0 or 5, and by 10 when it ends in 0.
Digit-sum rules
- A number is divisible by 3 when the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.
- A number is divisible by 9 when the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.
For example, the digits of 234 total 9, so the number is divisible by both 3 and 9. Several rules may apply to the same number. For a missing-digit problem, add the known digits first and determine the required total.
