Sample questions
- Solve (x + b)/(x + a) = c.
- Solve x/(x + a) = b.
- Solve 1/(x − (a)) = b.
- What restriction on x applies to 1/(x − (a))?
- What must be done after obtaining roots of a rational equation?
- One worker completes a job in a h and another in b h. How many hours will they need for t such jobs together?
- For (x − (r))/(x − (d)) = 0, the candidate is x = x. Is it valid?
- Solve (x − (r))/(x − (d)) = 0.
Rational equations
In a rational equation, the unknown occurs in a denominator. Before solving, identify all excluded values that make any original denominator zero.
Solution method
Find a common denominator and multiply both sides by it to obtain a simpler equation. Solve that equation and check every candidate in the original. Multiplication by an expression may introduce extraneous solutions, so the original domain restrictions must remain in force.
