September 1: How to Prepare for a New Beginning

The beginning of a new school year can bring both excitement and worry. A few simple ideas can help students and parents approach it more calmly.

September 1 is almost here. For some students it is an exciting day when they can meet their friends again, while for others it may bring nervousness or even anxiety—especially when a new class, a new school or greater learning challenges lie ahead.

Feeling nervous before the school year begins is completely normal. Uncertainty often brings many questions: “Will I fit in?”, “Will I make friends?” and “Will I do well at school?” You do not need to solve everything before the school year has even started. The first days are there to help you settle in and gradually find your rhythm.

If you are starting at a new school

A new school means new teachers, classmates and surroundings, so it may feel uncomfortable at first. Do not expect to know everything immediately or to feel at home from the first day. Give yourself time.

Try greeting your classmates, do not be afraid to ask simple questions and join shared activities. Sometimes a new friendship begins with nothing more than a simple hello.

A few tips for students

  • Prepare your schoolbag and clothes the evening before.
  • Try to get a good night of sleep.
  • Do not be afraid to ask when you do not know something.
  • Do not compare yourself with others.
  • If you feel worried, talk to someone you trust.
  • Give yourself time to adjust to change.

A few tips for parents

It is important for parents to ask not only about grades, but also about how their child feels. If a child is worried, saying “there is nothing to be afraid of” may not help. It is better to listen and show that their feelings matter.

Help your child prepare in practical ways, but allow them to solve small problems independently. Avoid comparing them with other children, and remember to notice effort as well as results.

Remember to check your knowledge

Before the school year begins, students can calmly revisit topics from the previous year. Katestai.lt offers free dynamic mathematics tests for students in grades 1–12. They can help you see what you remember well and which topics are worth reviewing once more.

Most importantly, remember that September 1 is not an examination. You do not need to know everything, know everyone or feel completely confident on the first day. A new beginning can feel slightly uncomfortable, and that is entirely normal.

The Katestai.lt team wishes every student a successful, curious and courageous new school year! May it be filled with new knowledge, good friends and many small victories.
